Dickinson State University approved for Master of Sports program

Aug. 10—DICKINSON — Sports are a huge economic industry offering a wide range of career opportunities. From business, finance, marketing and legal issues in the sports world to embarking on a journey to work in coaching for any sport from the amateur ranks through scholastic levels and even the top professional leagues.

Dickinson State University received approval from the Higher Learning Commission to offer a master’s degree in athletics. The newly developed Master of Sport Administration aims to prepare highly qualified mid-career professionals and recent higher ed. graduates to advance their coaching or athletic administration professions.

The program is designed for individuals who have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree and wish to pursue a master’s degree to advance in the coaching or athletic administration arena.

Starting with the fall 2022 semester, students can pursue the MSA in a flexible, online format that fits most working adults’ lives, according to the DSU Communications department. All the coursework will be taught asynchronously by highly qualified faculty members.

“Learners will be exposed to all aspects of athletics leadership, including administration, psychology, strength and conditioning, recruiting and fundraising,” Thadd O’Donnell, chair of health, physical education and recreation at DSU, said. “The program is intended to get students ready for these roles, whether it’s coaching a sport or sports or leading an entire athletic club or department.”

Dickinson State is now accepting applications for admission to the Master of Sport Administration in Athletic Leadership program.

“With the steady growth of youth and adult competitive activities, both team-focused and individual, the MSA is a sound approach to holistically train professionals in the planning and implementation of relevant, safe and sustainable athletic programs, activities and events,” John Miller, DSU interim vice president and provost, said.
